Forest Management
Accurate and reliable forestry management provides foundational information for building sustainable, profitable forest operations. However, measuring vast areas of dense forest with challenging terrains makes accurate inventory assessment an expensive and complex operation for a forest service department. Coupled with increasing weather and wildfire risk, forest service operators face increasing health and safety risks when surveying in the field.
To help offload the burden of field work, multispectral remote sensing technology is being used to generate digital forest models and improve field data collection efficiency, but its limited optical channels under-represent the unique differences between individual trees, resulting in a generalized estimate of forest health, rather than a detailed assessment. LiDAR remote sensing technology is also being used, but has difficulty scaling up to meet the large area needs of forest operators. The net result is a loss in harvest efficiency for the forest operator and missed opportunities to improve operating margins. Hyperspectral imagery can be used for improved forestry management.
Improve forest inventory accuracy.
Wyvern hyperspectral data products capture more vegetation information than traditional multispectral sensors, characterizing forest composition (tree species type, crown width, canopy density and growth stage) and tree health with precision. In addition, the high spatial resolution collections provide granular details that can be actioned on.
Improve operational efficiency.
Wyvern leverages hyperspectral technology to enable sustainable forestry management by collecting information at scale from space, reducing man hours and safety risks associated with in-field forest plot sampling. Where thousands of man hours and equipment would be required to effectively sample and monitor Canada’s vast forest plots, hyperspectral imaging from space can collect thousands of square kilometers of data with a fraction of the time and resources.
