Invasive Species
Detecting and mitigating the spread of invasive species and infectious spread is critical to minimize timber loss and maximize forest operations. However, determining the distribution and where to mitigate is difficult because signs of infection are often invisible from the outside of the tree. Often, it takes the eyes of a trained arborist to conduct a ground sample to validate the spread of infection. By then, damage has already begun to spread. Multispectral sensors have been used to attempt to characterize infection rates by examining the health of forest canopies, however their limited spectral bands cannot clearly distinguish tree stress from an invasive species versus general environmental stress. Narrowband hyperspectral indices can improve invasive species detection.
Improve invasive species detection.
Wyvern hyperspectral data products capture more vegetation information than traditional multispectral sensors, distinguishing infections from other tree stressors. In addition, the high spatial resolution collections provide granular details that can be actioned on.
Reduce significant timber loss.
Early invasive species detection plays a crucial role in mitigating timber loss and preserving the health and productivity of forests. Invasive species pose a significant threat to forest ecosystems by outcompeting native species, disrupting natural processes, and causing widespread damage. By detecting invasive species at an early stage, forest managers and stakeholders can implement timely intervention strategies to contain and control their spread.
